Had ups and downs in 2012? Cheer up! cries Rose Odengo: concentrate on the here and now – and a happy 2013

Yay! It’s time to ditch the heels and whip your hair, ladies! This December, I am out to have a blast. I have been blessed with a great year, and there is so much to celebrate and look forward to.

Maybe not everything worked out as planned. Big deal! Nothing ever does. But, you know what? What counts is that I am alive and well. And the fact that you are alive and able to read this today is something worth celebrating.

I love animated films. No matter how old I get, I never tire of them. One lazy weekend, my beau and I plunged onto the couch, stocked up on junk and watched Kung Fu Panda. Again. There’s one line I really love: “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery. But today is a gift – that’s why it is called the present.”

You may have just had the worst year of your life. But the fact that you lived through it is a sign you can handle it – and that something greater is on its way.

Don’t be fooled. I used to have a love-hate relationship with the end of the year. I always looked forward to three weeks of fun, food and laughter – but at the same time I hated the in-law obligations, the cooking, the entertaining and the trying to figure out what in the world I did the whole year!

But it doesn’t matter what the magazines are selling or what Christmas deals are in the shops. As long as I am with my beau, family and friends to celebrate life this Christmas, I do not need 50,000 shillings for a few days at a villa on the south coast.

My celebration is where the ones I love reside – be that in my home in Nairobi, out in the village with the in-laws, or at the foot of Mt Kenya in a beautiful log cabin. Those are just details.

Because Christmas isn’t just about giving – it’s a celebration of life. I hope one of the things that you will do come 2013 is to celebrate every day you’re alive. And celebrate it with the ones you love most.

I used to be so concerned about getting older. But you know what? It’s something to look forward to. Because with every year, you grow wiser and more loving. This Christmas, live and love harder than ever before. Let your love and warmth be your Christmas gift – and let it spill into a great new year!

Have a great Christmas, everyone – and a fabulous 2013. Enjoy your present!
